ALABAMA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA STREAMS PERFORMANCE OF ELLIOT CARTER’S SOUNDINGS
The ASO is pleased to make their February 2008 performance of Elliot Carter's Soundings available to the public for online streaming. This recording also features ASO Music Director and Principal Conductor Justin Brown on piano.
Symphony magazine, the popular industry publication for the League of American Orchestras, features Brown in a tribute to the renowned composer. Elliot Carter celebrates his 100th Birthday this year.
As Brown states in the Symphony article, “To have one of the titans of twentieth century music – a man five years older than Britten and Lutoslawski – still with us and still writing is almost too good to be true.”
In the November-December issue, Brown references last spring's concert, Beethoven’s Fifths where Carter’s work was performed. “Playing Carter just before Beethoven was an attempt to remind ears that have become accustomed to Beethoven’s sound-world what it might have been like to hear him for the first time.”
Speaking again of that performance, Brown says, “With a little advance warning of what to expect, the audiences were easily able to grasp and enjoy Carter’s quirky wit, his exuberant invention, and even his unexpected lyricism. Given the right groundwork, audiences are more willing to be adventurous than we tend to give them credit for.”
The stream will be available online through January 6, 2008.
